How We Verify Water Filter Claims
We don't trust manufacturer marketing. Every performance claim on Filter Authority is verified against independent lab testing and certification databases.
Why This Matters
During our research, we discovered significant discrepancies between what manufacturers claim and what independent testing shows. For example:
- ✗Waterdrop 10UA: Amazon listing claimed "98%+ lead removal" — independent testing showed only 3.8% lead removal
- ✗Frizzlife: NSF International issued a public notice (August 2023) about unauthorized certification claims
- ✗BRITA Maxtra+: Often assumed to remove contaminants, but testing shows only 14% lead removal — it's for taste, not health protection
These aren't minor differences. Someone relying on a carbon filter for lead protection could be putting their family at risk.
Our Verification Process
1. Independent Lab Testing
We cross-reference manufacturer claims against independent testing from:
- TechGearLab — Independent outdoor and home gear testing lab
- Consumer Reports — Non-profit consumer testing organization
- Wirecutter — New York Times product testing
2. Certification Database Verification
We verify NSF and other certifications directly in official databases:
- NSF International Certified Product Listings
- Water Quality Association Product Finder
- IAPMO R&T Product Listing Directory
Important: "Tested to NSF standards" is NOT the same as "NSF Certified." We clearly distinguish between the two.
3. Clear, Honest Reporting
When we find discrepancies, we:
- Report the verified performance, not the marketing claim
- Add clear warnings where products don't perform as advertised
- Link to our sources so you can verify for yourself
- Recommend alternatives when a product doesn't meet its claims
